LUCKY GRANDMA, starring Tsai Chin, is the feature directorial debut of Sasie Sealy. The film held its world premiere at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival as the second recipient of the AT&T Presents: Untold Stories $1 million grant initiative and went on to an international premiere at the BFI London Film Festival. Set in New York’s Chinatown, Chin portrays an ornery, newly-widowed 80-year-old eager to live life as an independent woman, despite her family’s concerns. When a local fortune teller (Wai Ching Ho) predicts a most auspicious day in her future, she decides to head to the casino, only to land herself on the wrong side of luck by suddenly attracting the attention of local gangsters. She then employs the services of a bodyguard from a rival gang, played by Corey Ha. “’Lucky Grandma’ is a dynamic comedy with a stand-out performance by Tsai Chin. A new song by Akwafina is also featured.

FROM THE FILMMAKERS:

“As the second recipient of AT&T’s Untold Stories grant, Lucky Grandma is part of a new vanguard of diverse filmmaking supported by AT&T and the Tribeca Film Institute. The one million dollar initiative, awarded to emerging voices with “untold stories,” allowed us to bring our vision for Lucky Grandma to life, filming in Chinatown and featuring an almost all Asian and Asian-American cast.

‘Lucky Grandma’ is played by the legendary Tsai Chin (Joy Luck Club, Casino Royal, Memoirs of a Geisha) with all the feisty, grumpy, hilarious charm we hoped for. And she is supported by an amazing cast of stage and screen veterans like Clem Cheung and Wai Ching Ho, as well as up-and-coming actors like Woody Fu and Michael Tow.

Behind the camera, we not only have an all-female filmmaking team (director, writer, producers), but also a diverse and amazing crew in every department. We hope their spirit and the generosity of the Untold Stories program shine through every frame of the film.”
