Hercules live-action remake cast, release date and more

Hercules has joined the long line of Disney live-action remakes in the works and this one’s got some Marvel seasoning.

Disney has hired Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer Dave Callaham – who’s also worked on Wonder Woman 1984 and Into the Spider-Verse 2 – to work on the remake of the 1997 animation.

The new version will be produced by Joe and Anthony Russo through their AGBO company, but the Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame pair will not be directing the movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It’s not yet clear if the live-action remake will be a faithful adaptation of the animations featuring the songs, like The Lion King and Aladdin remakes, or if they’ll go bold and focus on the original mythology, like Mulan, perhaps without the songs.

Even the Russos don’t know whether it’ll be a musical yet, but they told Collider that “music will certainly be a part of it”.

“We’re going to give you a different story. I think we’ll do something that’s in the vein of the original and inspired by it, but we also bring some new elements to the table,” Anthony Russo added.

So it’s early doors on the movie, but here’s everything we do actually know about Disney’s live-action remake of Hercules.

Hercules cast: Who’s in the Hercules live-action remake cast?

It’s still too early for any names to be officially cast in the remake, but there is a lot of support for Ariana Grande to take on the role of Megara.

This is largely because she performed the song ‘I Won’t Say I’m in Love’ during The Disney Family Singalong, providing all the backing vocals herself, that aired before the live-action remake was confirmed.

Disney fans have also had a lot of thoughts about casting in the other key roles with names like Armie Hammer and Chris Pratt being mentioned for Hercules, while Jim Carrey and Jeff Goldblum appear to be popular choices for Hades.

Perhaps the biggest casting challenge facing Disney is the roles of the Muses which feels like it’ll face as much scrutiny as the casting of Ursula in the upcoming Little Mermaid remake.

Amber Riley, Jennifer Hudson, Janelle Monae, Lizzo and the entire Destiny’s Child line-up have been among the names suggested by Disney fans so far.

In early June, a fake casting announcement with the likes of Jodie Comer as Megara and Noah Centineo as Hercules did the rounds on Twitter.

And given the reaction to Centineo’s supposed casting, it’s lucky for Disney that it was just an extremely clever fan edit, using the structure of The Lion King live-action casting announcement in 2017.

Hercules release date: When can we expect the Hercules live-action remake?

There’s no word yet on when the remake might start filming (especially with the current global situation), so we don’t have a confirmed release date yet.

However, Disney has a whole host of release date slots for live action movies in the years to come from 2022 and beyond.

The current dates are as follows: April 8, 2022, May 27, 2022, August 12, 2022, November 4, 2022, March 10, 2023, May 26, 2023, July 14, 2023, August 11, 2023, October 6, 2023, December 15, 2023.

Realistically, we’re probably looking at the August 2022 release date onwards, but at least there are plenty of options for Disney.

That’s not even taking into account that the remake might well be one for Disney+, like Lady and the Tramp. If that is the case, then it wouldn’t have to stick to one of these planned release dates.

We’ll have to wait until the remake starts filming to have any idea of when the first trailer will arrive.
