A day in the life of the emerging talent who now gets to kickstart his brand with Globe Business
Most chats with seasoned fashion designers, whether casual or well-documented, have led us to a conclusion: fashion competitions are not what they used to be. No longer is it enough for a designer to create for the sake of beauty, escapism or satisfying some fantasy. Art must now marry commerce. And fashion designers must now try on another hat in order to stay afloat in the current landscape: that of an entrepreneur. Because the truth is, and as the contestants of the Designer Mentorship Program of StyleFestPH were quick to learn, the future of fashion lies in the hands of those who not only thrive in the art space but also know to how to survive in the world of business.
This, if anything, has helped set StyleFestPH apart. As the newest expo to join the Philippines’ already crowded lineup of fashion events, the 0917 Lifestyle and Saga Events-led festival does more than mount a competition for emerging talents or serve as a springboard for new names. It makes sure to include a crucial follow-through where up-and-coming fashion designers are supported as they become independent brands in their own right.
It’s here, at the finish line of the 2019 Designer Mentorship Program, where we meet Pampanga-based designer Adrian Sahagun. A graduate from the Fashion Institute of the Philippines, he made an impressive return to the industry (with StyleFestPH, no less, as the avenue for this) after a hiatus from designing. He bested three other hopefuls in the competition’s 0917 Lifestyle segment and brought home the coveted grand prize for his collection, “Streetly Formal.”
This means that on top of the exclusive mentorship with living legend Inno Sotto, Zalora Philippines CEO Paulo Campos, head of 0917 Lifestyle Leah De Guzman and in-demand fashion designer Carl Jan Cruz, Adrian Sahagun snagged a P50,000 cash prize, scored a deal with 0917 Lifestyle to have his winning capsule collection produced and sold nationwide and, finally, was awarded a business solutions package (that pretty much doubles as a starter kit for any modern-day brand looking to hit the ground running) by Globe Business.
Where 2020 takes this emerging designer, we can’t wait to see. But for now, we’re set on getting a glimpse of a day in the life of this budding creative to see how being hands-on can meet with going digital, how taking the time to plan social media posts is crucial for today’s brands and how the new kids on the block can learn from experienced industry greats that came before them.
From setting up Facebook ads to getting your business internet-ready with an unli-internet plan, whether it’s a fashion label, a beauty brand, a budding restaurant or a small-scale B&B, you can take your business further with Globe Business.
