I recently got the opportunity the talk with author, mom, wife, serial entrepreneur and superwoman K.S. Oliver. She is a survivor and wants to encourage people not to become victims of their circumstances but to use them as motivation to reach your dreams. Your health, is the ultimate wealth.
Take us back to the plane ride. The one that changed everything. Walk us through what was going on.
The plane ride was worse than the actual diagnosis. I can’t remember everything because I was in and out of consciousness. I was confused for myself and afraid for my son. We were so many feet off the ground and I wasn’t sure what my fate was.
When you were diagnosed with Lupus, did you feel any type of relief knowing that what you were going through had a name or did it make things worse?
The diagnosis was the relief I needed. The name gave me a sense of relief. It took a while for the damage to set in.
Being a military wife and mother has its own challenges. How did/do you cope with the day to day?
Being a military wife is a hard task as is . I literally had to take it day by day.
What brought you to the entrepreneurial path?
Once I realized that my life had changed so much and it would never be the same I had to figure out what career path would work for me. Lupus is an unpredictable disease. I don’t know from day to day what my health will be like so to avoid explaining to a boss that today isn’t my day I chose to go in business for myself so that I could move at my own pace.
What does having Lupus mean to you?
I believe you have what you say you have so being diagnosed with Lupus means strength and change to me
Many times, especially in the African American community, there’s a stigma that goes with being proactive with health issues and just going to the doctor period. What advice would you give to encourage people to take their health more seriously?
Always trust your own mind
What current projects are you working on and what can we expect from you in the near future?
I am currently working on an urban novel with the Literary Ladies of the ATL and another with Nika Michelle
What’s one thing you want everyone to know about you?
I am not a victim of circumstance
We know some days can be better than others. How do you manage on the “no-so-good” days?
I relax and take it for what it is… A day off
Besides your kids and husband, what keeps you going?
Prayer, my children and my husband
