Big Carolina: Making His Name in The Hip Hop World

Big Carolina has emerged out of the local Hip Hop scene that is dominant in the state that bears his namesake. In a cluttered industry where everybody is vying to make a name for themselves, Big Carolina benefitted from the guidance of his older brother who had first hipped him to the Hip Hop scene. He benefitted from his older brother’s knowledge who bestowed upon him the wisdom that “it’s possible to record, but the part of becoming a star is the part you have to work on.” Big Carolina took that insight to heart as he used it as motivation when he cultivated his own career. He bought his first laptop at 15 and has since hit the ground running, finding success as a self-taught and self-made artist.

Big Carolina did not let his brother’s wisdom fall by the wayside as he watched the music scene unravel in the 252, where he saw most, if not all, of the artists operating on a hamster wheel work ethic. Where they were continuously running in circles and expending energy but getting nowhere as they had limited business and marketing strategies. It wasn’t until he went to the Raleigh-Durham area where he how that Hip Hop scene was moving, and he saw their business tactics, that he had a “lightbulb” realization of how to succeed. He used his talent, his skills and his energy and melded it with the business and marketing strategies he learned in Raleigh-Durham. It was the right move as he has been touring non-stop, doing features and music videos, and making the moves he needs to elevate his career to the next level. His strategic movements have gained him radio airplay throughout the Carolina’s where he has become “regionally/locally famous”.

Growing up in a small town called Edgecombe County, North Carolina, Big Carolina did not see a lot of opportunities as he viewed this are as being a small town filled with small dreams and small aspirations. He knew he was destined for bigger things, and once he was introduced to the culture of Hip Hop, he knew that was what he was meant to do. That was his driving force for success. Growing up as a 90’s baby, one of his earliest influences and the foundation of his career was none other than Ice Cube. He saw his career as one he’d aspire to emulate. He strives to be a multiple-threat artist. Dominating music through rapping and producing as well as acting in movies. He takes his natural charisma and magnetism and injects it into his comedy skits as well as his music and stage presence.

Big Carolina, being self-made, has used the tools that are readily available to him and has used them to build his career and fanbase to heights that would have been near impossible to reach prior to social media. He has not had to navigate the murky waters of paying to perform a many up-and-coming artists have had to do. He built up his fanbase and career through his own ingenuity. He saw the power held within social media and knew that he could reach more people through that platform as opposed to a one-off performance in a North Carolina club. He figured if he connects with a fan on social media, they have access to thousands of his videos and songs with the click of a button as opposed to having to travel and see/hear him one time. That’s smart marketing, and others should take note. He knows and has so much faith in his own career and abilities that he feels that he shouldn’t have to travel for success, and that opportunities that reside outside of North Carolina should come to him. He wants to make North Carolina a powerhouse in the Hip Hop scene much like NY, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Big Carolina has used his thirst for knowledge and combined it with “YouTube University”, as he has taught himself the various skills that he needs to excel in multiple fields outside of being a rapper. He learned how to make he make his own beats, which he transitioned into opportunities where he made beats for Da Baby’s label and Rich The Kid’s label as well as a litany of other artists. He also has started his own label/company Poor High Class Entertainment. He is a self-taught director which is a talent he brought to the table when he was directing his own videos. This young man is currently an unsigned and independent artist, but he is armed with enough talent that could very well become a powerhouse in the industry given all that he has learned and accomplished with no signs of slowing down.
