Best new beauty campaigns 2019

The campaigns and brand new celebrity faces behind the biggest beauty product launches of the year are often just as exciting as the formulas they are advertising. These are the big beauty campaigns setting social media alight, from Fran Summers for Burberry to Jodie Comer for Noble Panacea.

1

L’Oréal Paris

The model and activist Cindy Bruna is far more than just a pretty face. A passionate advocate, she has campaigned against domestic violence in France and hair discrimination against black women in the modelling industry for years. Now, she is determined to show all women that they are ‘worth it’ as the new spokesperson for L’Oréal Paris.

2

L’Oréal Paris

“I’m so proud to join L’Oreal Paris as a new spokesperson, the iconic French brand that celebrates all women and infinite ways to be beautiful,” revealed Bruna who will make her L’Oréal Paris debut in skincare and haircare campaigns in July. “We’re all absolutely worth it – yet we don’t always believe it. But by standing up for our rights and our dreams, we have the power to change our lives, and also those of others.”

3

Burberry

As Burberry’s new beauty campaign proves, Fran Summers has a face that so effortlessly sells make-up. With her enviable pout defined by a bold red lip colour (probably Burberry Kisses in Poppy Red), the British model has recently added ‘the face of Burberry Beauty’ to her impressive modelling resume. She will star in campaigns for the brand from autumn 2020.

4

Noble Panacea

The Emmy award winning actress Jodie Comer, known for her killer turn in Killing Eve, is the new global ambassador for the luxury skincare brand Noble Panacea, Excitingly, the partnership not only sees her front the campaign for the brand’s sachet-based creams. It also means she is at the heart of it’s Think Beautifully mission, meaning the star will work with Girl Up, a non-profit founded by the United Nations Foundation, to embolden girls to be leaders in the movement for gender equality.

5

Chanel

Marion Cotillard has been announced as the face of Chanel No5, posing for a campaign in which her glossy mane could make you mistake it for a hair commercial. This is the first time the French actress has leant her face to a fragrance, and what a first it is, considering the ionic No5 scent is so instantly recognisable. We cannot wait to see the full campaign later this year.

6

Lancôme

Amanda Seyfried can now add ‘Lancôme ambassador’ to her packed resume, which also includes being a talented actress and singer in films such as Les Miserables and Mamma Mia!. It’s hugely exciting to be welcomed to this incredible family of women ambassadors”, said Seyfried. Read more here.

7

Dior

Gisele Bünden was unveiled as the face of Dior’s Iconic Capture Totale skincare line and her enviably flawless complexion certainly makes her an excellent fit for the role.

8

L’Oreal Paris

Viola Davis has been announced as an international spokeswoman for L’Oreal Paris. The actress will appear in the brand’s Age Perfect campaigns (across TV, print and digital) later this month.

The first black actress to win the ‘triple crown’ of acting – an Oscar, Emmy and Tony award – Davis joins fellow A-list celebrities including Helen Mirren and Eva Longoria in L’Oreal’s roster, which is designed to encourage beauty inclusivity and empowerment.

“I worked tremendously hard to get where I am today – overcoming feelings of doubt to become a woman who truly believes I am ‘worth it’ in every way,” says Davis. “I believe it’s so important to build confidence in women from a young age, and to role model diverse perspectives of beauty. To now be part of a brand that has been championing women’s worth for more than 40 years and to use my voice to help empower others is truly surreal.”

9

Burberry

Semi-matte skin is back if Lily James’ flawless complexion in Burberry’s Matte Glow foundation campaign is any indication.

10

Burberry

The campaign video shows James’ luminous skin from all angles, demonstrating the seamless, natural-looking finish of the long-wearing formula that is available in 30 shades.

11

Chanel

It is notoriously difficult to visually capture the scent of a fragrance, but as the face of Chanel’s Gabrielle Chanel Essence, Margot Robbie accomplishes it, through her appearance in the campaign swathed in sheer silk while swaying to the Beyoncé song, ‘Halo’.

12

Chanel

As the lyrics say, ‘everywhere I’m looking now, I’m surrounded by your embrace’ and the enchanting campaign hints towards the lingering softness of the scent, which combines four white flowers: jasmine, ylang-ylang, orange blossom and tuberose.

13

Chanel

Watch the actress, who recently starred in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood alongside Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, in the campaign now.

14

Guerlain

Angelina Jolie’s second campaign for Guerlain, this time as the face of the Mon Guerlain Intense fragrance, was filmed in and around the actress and director’s beautiful Cambodian home. Captured by Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, Jolie is seen reclining in bed as The Troggs’ Wild Thing plays, before spritzing on the scent and exploring the lush tropical landscape around her.

15

Dior

You might think it’s impossible to want Cara Delevinge’s complexion anymore than you already do, but this Dior video campaign may have just succeeded.

16

Dior

The supermodel is the perfect face for the reformulated Capture Dreamskin Care & Perfect; a skincare product that, as the campaign explains, is proven to improve the hydration and visible smoothness of your skin within seven days.

17

L’Oreal Paris

Geri Horner is spreading awareness about sun damage being the number one cause of premature ageing in L’Oréal Paris’ campaign for the Revitalift Laser Renew SPF20 Day Cream. Her message includes the fact that daylight – not just strong tropical sunshine – can cause damage to your skin, a fact that should be more widely acknowledged.

18

Michael Kors

Look away now if you don’t want to be inspired to immediately book yourself a beachside holiday. That’s because Gigi Hadid perfectly embodies the joy and youthful energy of summer trips abroad in Michael Kors’ fragrance campaign for the aptly named Wonderlust scent.

19

Michael Kors

The supermodel epitomises the adventurous spirit of the fragrance, as she poses in an array of enviable outfits that we’d love to add to our holiday shopping list.

20

Michael Kors

Hadid’s wet-look waves and glowy skin also prove plenty of summer beauty inspiration in the campaign, which was shot in Turks and Caicos by renowned Dutch photography duo Inez & Vinoodh.

21

Michael Kors

“Michael Kors Wonderlust is a vacation in a bottle,” says Hadid. “The fragrance is an escape—a little luxury that takes you away. I love the floral notes and the versatility, it carries me from a day at the beach to a night out with friends.”

22

YSL Beauté

Grammy and Brit award-winning artist Dua Lipa is the face of YSL Beauté, and will represent the brand’s feminine fragrance. Her bold voice and edgy, sultry beauty makes her an ideal ambassador for the brand. She said: “I stand for the importance of being confident, strong and powerful and of not compromising on who you are, what you do and what you believe in, of always being proud of the things you do, and I feel that goes down very well with the same philosophy behind Yves Saint Laurent.”

23

Chanel

Margot Robbie as Chanel’s fragrance ambassador is the face of the brand’s perfume collection – including the iconic No.5 scent. The Australian actress, known for her diverse film role choices, from disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding to Queen Elizabeth I, is already a fashion ambassador for the luxury fashion brand, so we can certainly expect beautiful things from the collaboration.

24

Christian Louboutin

From Prada muse to the beauty world, Argentine model Mica Arganaraz is Christian Louboutin’s first global beauty ambassador. In the campaign, Arganarez wears Louboutin’s iconic red shade on her lips and nails and effortlessly combines the elegance yet individuality that so befits the brand.

25

Christian Louboutin

“I love Christian Louboutin’s vision and sense of beauty”, says Arganaraz. “Red is my favourite colour. Red is passion and ingenuity. It makes me feel fierce, and it makes me feel like myself. Plus, it’s amazingly versatile – I think red lips are the perfect transition from day to night.”

26

Dior

Dispelling the myth that pink lipstick is soft and girly, Cara Delevingne gives a commanding performance in the campaign for Dior’s Dior Addict Stella lipsticks. Posing in New York City with confidence and attitude, the only thing making more of an impact than the supermodel is the high-pigment, high-shine bright pink colour on her lips.

27

Bobbi Brown

Yara Shahadi has become an ambassador for Bobbi Brown – a brand she revealed has long been one of her favourites because of its range of inclusive foundation shades. But, the model and activist is not just going to be the face. As part of the #PrettyPowerful campaign, she’s supporting charities that mean something to her too.

28

Bobbi Brown

“True beauty is not about physical characteristics but about being yourself, which may change every single moment of the day”, says Shahadi, who is shown enjoying the process of making up her face in the campaign. As for her best make-up trick: “Finding what makes you happy and for me it’s when my brows are combed and my lips are moisturized and hydrated.”

29

Lancôme

Zendaya has become the youngest ever ambassador for luxury skincare brand Lancôme, at the tender age of 22. Explaining the decision to recruit the young actress, Françoise Lehmann, Lancôme’s international president said: “Zendaya brings a youthful and a unique approach to beauty that perfectly complements Lancôme’s vision and creativity.”

The singer-come-actress, who starred alongside Hugh Jackman in The Greatest Showman, joins a group of high-profile women that includes Julia Roberts and Lupita Nyong’o, signalling a continuation of Lancôme’s championing of inclusivity, which we hope will long continue.

30

Chanel

Proving that the right make-up really can make you feel like a different person, Lily-Rose Depp stars alongside herself in Chanel’s Rouge Coco Flash lipstick campaign. Multiple iterations of the starlet are shown experimenting with the high-shine collection, aided by the transparent caps that are designed to help you find your perfect shade.

See the full campaign on the next slide.

31

Chanel

The playful campaign was created under the direction of the photographer Sølve Sundsbø. It features a selection of the 27 Rouge Coco Flash shades that have replaced the original Rouge Coco Shine collection.

32

Armani Sì

How would your life change “if you said Si?”. That’s the question posed by Cate Blanchett, the Oscar-winning actress and Giorgio Armani’s global beauty ambassador, in the brand’s campaign for the Sì fragrance.

33

Armani Sì

In the film directed by Fleur Fortuné, Blanchett is captured jumping out of a plane, wearing a couture dress at the supermarket, running against the flow and enjoying a party. All express a sense of freedom, individuality and daring that Armani Beauty hopes one feels when spritzing on the perfume.

You can watch the full campaign on the next slide.

34

Armani Sì

The advert’s soundtrack is a remix of ‘You Don’t Own Me’, by American pop singer Lesley Gore. It perfectly reflects Cate Blanchett’s striking and rebellious attitude in the campaign.

35

Dior

Natalie Portman stars in the campaign for Diorskin Forever, which is positioned as a 24-hour wear skin-caring foundation. In this film the actress describes it as “seductive” – a part she plays well herself. This version of the foundation is “more skin true than ever”, according to Peter Philips, creative and image director of Christian Dior Makeup.

36

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs Beauty has announced Irina Shayk as the face of the brand for 2019.

37

Marc Jacobs

In the campaign, shot by David Sims, Shayk wears the Eye-Conic Multi-Finish Eyeshadow Palette in Frivoluxe.

38

Nars

Naomi Campbell is the face of Nars’ Spring 2019 make-up campaign and stars in a series of four creative images shot by François Nars himself. 39

Dior

Cara Delevingne stars as the face of Dior Addict Stellar Shine Lipstick. In the campaign image the model and actress plays a modern muse in a monotone outfit punctuated by pink lips.

Lila Moss, Kate Moss’ daughter, has secured her first beauty campaign at the tender age of 16, as she was unveiled as the face of Marc Jacobs Beauty. The young model, who wears the brand’s Fineliner Gel Eye Crayons, is not the first model offspring to be chosen by Marc Jacobs, as she follows in the footsteps of Kaia Gerber, while other previous faces include Edie Campbell and Adwoa Aboah.

41

Dior

Bella Hadid plays make-up muse in Dior’s Halloween film, modelling three different beauty looks created by Peter Philips, Dior Make-up’s creative and image director.

42

Dior

In one of the looks Hadid sports geometrical shapes created with liquid liner, including a mystical third eye on her forehead. On her lips the iconic Rouge Dior 999 imbues rich glamour.

43

Maison Margiela

‘Celebrate your individuality’ is the rallying call of Mutiny, Maison Margiela’s campaign, which is a refreshing and raw celebration of diversity and nonconformity, featuring six women including Willow Smith.

44

Maison Margiela

The ‘mutiny’ of the campaign is not loud or brash but personal, with each of the six women captured in portraits in front of a blank canvas. It lets their individual traits shine through, whether that be their hair, tattoos or unique facial features.

45

Maison Margiela

In fact, the fragrance campaign aims to celebrate the mutiny of creativity, a fitting message for a scent that has been developed in order to embrace the rawness of tuberose, the note at its heart.

46

Dior

It’s no coincidence that Jennifer Lawrence’s performance in Dior’s fragrance campaign will have you experience the emotion that also happens to be the name of the scent; Joy. Lawrence shines as the face of the sun-drenched campaign that will have you eager to book a holiday to hotter climes.

47

Dior

The video campaign, which you can watch on the next slide, was directed by Francis Lawrence. Despite their shared surname, the pair are not related but have worked closely together before, including on The Hunger Games, the film trilogy through which Jennifer Lawrence gained worldwide fame.

51

Lancôme’s La vie est belle, the world’s third best-selling fragrance, was originally designed to capture the essence of a woman’s smile. Well now, the face of the scent, Julia Roberts shares that happiness in a campaign shot by Alexi Lubomirski, which sees her signature smile light up and unite a room of disconnected people.

52

Estée Lauder

She joins a squad of supermodels including Kendall Jenner, Karlie Kloss and Joan Smalls, and her first campaign for the brand is for the cult Double Wear Make-up range, at a time where the brand’s foundation shade range has expanded to 61 shades.

“I am so excited to be a part of the Estée Lauder family,” said Yai. “To be a woman of colour representing an iconic brand that has continuously been at the forefront of beauty, is an honour. I hope to be an inspiration to young girls and women and encourage them to feel undeniably beautiful.”

53

Calvin Klein

Why feature one talented women when you can honour six – that’s the message that rings out of Calvin Klein’s fragrance campaign, for the aptly-named Calvin Klein Women. The campaign stars the actresses Lupita Nyong’o and Saoirse Ronan, alongside the women who have inspired them, including Katharine Hepburn and Nina Simone.

“With this fragrance, we wanted to put the concept of plurality center stage”, explained Raf Simons, chief creative officer at Calvin Klein. “The campaign is an exploration of femininity – a group of women bonded by a common thread; the desire to have the power to create their own identity, and to support and lead the way for those that come after them.”

64
