Hannah Spivey: So, tell our readers a little about yourself and what you do?

Deniece Barnes: I am radio and television personality. I began my media/broadcasting career over 20 years ago in Nashville, TN. I actually began my very own radio show at one of Nashville’s oldest radio stations, WVOL 1470 AM “Nashville’s Heritage Station” the station where media mogul, Oprah Winfrey began her broadcasting career. My radio program, DIFFERENCES Radio Magazine Show has been broadcasting for the last 6 years throughout Middle Tennessee and worldwide via ustreamtv.com The show’s main focus is “Keeping You in the know” about Entertainment, Health, Food, Fashion, Lifestyles and Community Affairs. On the show, I conduct interviews with notable guests including celebrity chefs, fashion experts, wellness experts and entertainers. My radio program has been such a success that we have decided to make it a television “spin-off” titled Coffee Table Conversations which will be airing on WNAB TV CW58, Nashville, TN

Hannah Spivey: Why did you decide to get into your occupation?

Deniese Barnes: I truly believe this is God’s path for me. I’ve always had this “dream” of being an actress or a journalist since my early years of high school. I relocated to Nashville, TN in the ‘90s with my son and daughter. I grew up in a small town in West Tennessee (Ripley, TN) miles east of Memphis, TN. There was not a lot of growth opportunities there for me in my fields of interest and raising two young children as a single mom motivated me more to aspire for my goals. After living in Nashville for a few years and working various jobs, I decided to further my education. I began attending Tennessee State University, studying Mass Communications. Years later, I began volunteering my services at WVOL radio station assisting a local talk show host with his daily show. I produced the show, booked political and celebrity guests and oftentimes served as guest co-host on the show. During a point, the host of the show went out on medical leave and the owner of the station asked me if I would fill in while he was out. Of course, I was a little nervous in the beginning, because I’d never ran the show all by myself but with LOTS of encouragement from my fiancé’ Sedgewick Lloyd and other friends, family members I actually ACED the first LIVE show as I interviewed the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Tennessee! When that was all over, the owner of the station asked me if I’d like to host my own show. Needless, to say, the rest is history. This is how I began my own radio program 6 years ago and have not looked back.

Hannah Spivey: How long have you been doing what you’re currently doing?

Deniece Barnes: 8 years

Hannah Spivey: What do you love and hate the most about your career field?

Deniece Barnes: What I love the most is learning about all of my guests. Thoroughly researching and being able to provide them a platform to share their craft with my viewers and listeners. What I hate the most is when the conversation is over from a fun, stimulating interview with that guest who has made me smile and enjoy my job even more.

Hannah Spivey: What are you currently working on, Deniece?

Deniece Barnes: I’m working on my brand new television show, Coffee Table Conversations the “spin-off” of my radio program. This is a weekly show that will air on WNAB TV CW58, Nashville, TN

Hannah Spivey: What is an average day like for you and how to do manage to juggle many duties?

Deniece Barnes: As you know, I do a LOT of social networking, blogging practically all day, every day. This is a MUST if I want to continue to keep my viewers and listeners “in the know”. I have developed a relationship with my many followers and they “expect” my daily updates plus many of my social networking site connections have developed a personal relationship with me. Many of them, I have never met in person but I feel this sense of attachment to them because so many of them encourage me alone the way on a daily basis and I’ll never forget that. I also book my own guests, prepare my own questions and conduct my own research so lots, and lots of reading is in order for each show to be a success. But, I’ll brag just a little. I consider myself a very organized and detail oriented individual so this allows me time to juggle all those duties and still remain effective and intact. Of course, I can’t leave out my business and PERSONAL partner, my fiancée Sedgewick Lloyd, CEO of Crosswind Media Advertising (our ad agency) and Executive Producer of my shows. He keeps me grounded, especially when I feel like throwing in the towel and just giving up. Sometimes, the stress of the industry gets heavy on me but Sedgewick is my biggest motivator. We are good for each other. He’s my soul mate. Ever heard the song, “We’re In This Love Together”? Well, that’s us.

Hannah Spivey: What should expect from you in the near future?

Deniece Barnes: Expect to see and hear lots more of me as I’m claiming in Jesus’ name that my brand new television show will be syndicated and be seen in many other markets! It’s been a long time coming but I know THE BEST IS YET TO COME!

Hannah Spivey: What and who inspires you to keep going?

Deniece Barnes: Of course, first and foremost is God. As mentioned earlier, my fiancé, Sedgewick is my motivator all day, every day. I keep myself going. A lot of times I have to realize that I’ve come too far in this thing to turn back and I truly believe that this year, 2014 is my year. My mantra: NEVER GIVE UP PURSUING YOUR DREAMS, NOR ALLOW OBSTACLES TO HINDER YOU IN ANY WAY. YOUR GOALS ARE ACHIEVABLE, IF YOU BELIEVE.

Hannah Spivey: How can people find you and connect with you?
